Another Turning Point. Otro punto de inflexión.
As one door closes, another will hopefully open.
Today, 2nd April, sees the start of the new financial year. It was of course yesterday, the 1st, but as this was a Public Holiday in the UK, today is my first working day.
It is the first working day of my 42nd financial year, having left school at 18 and having been involved with finance and accounting ever since. Did I set out to be in this world? No, I, as with most young boys, saw myself as a footballer, an astronaut or a cowboy, but I soon realised that these were niche and challenging paths to follow and very little in school taught you the essentials for such careers. I ended up in finance by accident, a temporary job initially that turned out to be a lifetimes work
I have now taken the decision to finish my life in finance on my 60th birthday and so I can say that this will have been my last financial year end. I’m not intending to give up work to sit on my backside but want to look for another career that gives me a new challenge and makes me want to fight again to achieve something. I have so many thoughts going through my head as to what that will be and it is exciting, as well as making me slightly nervous. I aim to achieve that work/life balance that so many talk about, to have something other than just two days at the weekend to complete the list of jobs that always require three days.
There is so much more to see and do in life and I’m fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to be able to this. Not everyone can, for a number of reasons. One of my closest friends, someone I have known for over 40 years and who is the same age as me, is extremely poorly with cancer. He will turn 60 in the next few days but who knows what the future holds for him. He too has worked all his life and had similarly started to wind down for his retirement. I hope he gets the opportunity to enjoy some quality time. We know our time on this wonderful planet is limited and every second is precious so I am going to try to live life as richly as I can.
So around August or September, date to be confirmed, I will wave goodbye to what has been my place of work for three decades and look forward in anticipation to where my next place of work will be.
I look forward to sharing the next few months with you.
