Everyone Should Walk The Camino. Todos deberían caminar el camino
Day 4 - Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis. Día 4 - Pontevedra a Caldas de Reis
I’m continuing to share my memories of last year’s Camino whilst planning for this year’s walk. Not a day goes by that I do not think of my Camino walks and give thanks for pleasure they have given me.
Day 4 Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis
Distance - 22.5km
Going - easy/medium. Mainly flat, a few inclines, nothing to steep or difficult. Scenery good. Mix of road and track.

I’ve priced a paid subscription as low as I can as I’m not looking to retire to the Bahamas anytime soon! It works out about 13 pence per day, or monthly, it’s the price of a cup of coffee (in England anyway!!)
If you don’t wish to subscribe, perhaps you would consider ‘buying me a coffee’ to help support my work.
I headed out in those wondrous minutes before the sun appears, where the darkness recedes, and that welcoming light of day starts to make everything seem better. Despite the age we live in where our world is dominated by technology, the primaeval aspects of our existence still come to the fore and the joy of a dawning day and a sunny morning makes us so happy.
Pontevedra was in that halfway house, trying to wake up, the streets quiet, a few people heading out, either to work or to continue their path. Shops, where yesterday they were full of life, busy and bustling, were now shut, empty and looking forward to when they can re-awaken.
I knew the path I had to follow, having walked the initial part yesterday and so I could enjoy my route out of the city without too much navigation. The old town looked even more impressive in the waking light, centuries old buildings once more coming to life to enjoy another day, standing proud, looking to impress another load of pilgrims and tourists.
My walk was slow as I took in every opportunity to look once more at the buildings. If only they could talk! Buildings the world over would be able to narrate the greatest stories of births, deaths, marriages, illicit affairs, murders, politics and so on. For such inanimate objects they hold so much life.
I walked towards the river and crossed the Ponte do Burgo bridge, stopping one last time for a photo of a waking Pontevedra. On the other side of the river a couple of cafes were open but it was still before 8.00 and I wasn't quite ready for breakfast. A left turn shortly after the bridge saw me head north on Rua da Santina. After a couple of hundred metres, take the left fork at a small roundabout junction, continuing on the Rua da Santina. This starts taking you out of Pontevedra through quiet residential suburbs. The road leads onto Rua da Gandara and the easy northerly walk continues. The houses start to thin out before the path takes you past the Fuenta Comunidad de Montes, then onwards with a slight incline up past the Church of Santa Maria de Alba and then , a bit further on, you pass the Cross of the same name.
Shortly after the road veers left and eventually you hit the junction with the PO-225, where again you swing left. You soon come into San Caetano, passing a little chapel. Continue walking, following the arrows, and you are soon back on empty roads and tracks that are running along the railway lines, though they are not visible. You are also now in the Rio de Gandara valley which gives a good mix of woodland, dirt track and road. A couple of crossings are ahead , one being a small stone bridge over a river, the other being the railway line itself. It is an open, unattended crossing, great visibility both sides so there should be no danger, but as always, take care! Recently, I’ve started taking more phots of rail tracks. The lines themselves and the places they run through create great photo opportunities, a sense of anticipation as to where they are heading (or coming from) and just give me a real feel good factor (perhaps that my hidden train-spotter coming out)!
The path continues through some woodland before shortly putting you back on a paved road into San Amaro and the delights of a cafe, A Pousada do Peregrino. Being the first cafe I had come across, apart from the ones in Pontevedra, I was happy to stop. It was busy and there was a lively buzz from fellow pilgrims. With my stomach sending some strong and audible signals that I needed some food, I found a table in a lovely covered garden and ordered some food. There was a queue inside but it moved quickly and two empandas were ordered, one being for later, together with a sparkling water and a cafe con leche. I carried my tray of delights back out to my table. Word of warning, the path is a little uneven and, guess what, I stumbled slightly, sending my water onto my coffee, spilling half of it! Laughing and cursing at the same time is a great stress reliever. Unperturbed,. I sat down, mopped up what I could and enjoyed the food. Just to say, the empanada was so good, I ate the second one there and then!
Refuelled and refreshed, I was back on my way, taking a left turn shortly after at the Meson Del Pulpo restaurant., walking onto the EP-0508, passing a picnic area and then the Lavadoiro de San Amaro. This was a nice stretch, on tarmac, but the road was not busy. There is a small detour up and over a hill to avoid a tight bend, re-joining the EP - 0508 at Cruceiro de Lamas. After approximately, 1.5km, you hit the EP-0506, where you turn left then almost immediately, take a right onto a track, Rua das Baladas. Further on you come to another junction, taking a right turn onto Rua Areal, the path taking you alongside large vineyards, leading you into Valbon and passing the Cruceiro da Monisa, where you keep left. You are then back in lovely open countryside, dirt tracks, big fields before hitting woodland. Continue on the well marked track, eventually coming to Cruceiro de Nane and then shortly after reaching the EP-0505. Cross and continue on, enjoying the extensive vineyards and dreaming of that delicious Rioja with your dinner!
You pass by a fantastic little bar/cafe at A Seca called Furancho. Really good choice of food and drinks, brilliant people running it, although it does seem to be a popular place for drinking more than a beer at lunchtime! Back on the path, it continues to run paralell with the N-550. You do have a few minutes walking on this busy road before once more veering into farmland and more vineyards (more wine!!).
The track re-joins the major highway but only for a short distance before again drifting left through Briallos.
Continuing northwards, the next town is Tivo and you walk past the Albergue Vintecatro, which looked so lovely I stopped for a beer. It had a great beer garden, a pool and looked like a lovely place to stay. Half an hour sipping a cold beer, under the shade was a great feeling but tempting though it was to stay here, I had a booking in Caldas de Reis so on I went.
After that, it is a case of following the arrows, walking roughly north and not before too long you are in Caldas de Reis. I was staying at the Hotel Lotus but I will tell you about that in my next article.
This was my fourth day of walking and I have to say it was getting better and better. The first day, Rubiaes to Tui, I did not enjoy due to to my fall and the fact I was tired. Day 2 was Tui to Redonela which was a very long day. The morning was lovely but the large industrial area (see article - my fault!) took the edge of it. Day 3, Redondela to Pontevedra and it was a great day with some stunning views and this day, Day 4, continued in the same vein, great walking and wonderful countryside.
I will leave you now but will update you with my stay at Hotel Lotus (wonderful place) and my next stage - Caldas de Reis to Padron.
