The end of my second day saw me arrive at Redondela, staying at A Solaina, a private apartment in the centre of town. Gaining access was interesting as I had to message the owner when I was outside who then let me in remotely and once inside, I was directed to the lift. The lift took me to the third floor and a separate door opened from the one I had entered, leading me into a small area, 1 metre x 1 metre, with the apartment door opposite the lift door. The smallest landing ever! The apartment however was very good indeed.
I was getting settled into my end of day routine. Washing, sorting my pack out, showering, before heading out to get some food. I had arranged to meet three ladies from Slovakia (sounds like a spy movie - Three Ladies From Slovakia) who I had got to know and amazingly they had booked a restaurant just 30 metres from my apartment. Thankfully, their English was infinitely better than my Slovakian so communication was not an issue. Whilst I like to walk alone most of the time, it was nice to have someone to talk to in the evening and we had a very enjoyable meal.
On last years Camino, I was not that concerned about getting up early and starting walking, but this year I had a different mindset. It was just after 07.30 and I was on my way, the sun not quite over the horizon, but sufficiently light for walking. I picked the path up very easily and headed off, the town still reasonably quiet, but already a few pilgrims who were also early risers. I had booked my accommodation along the camino as I can’t be bothered to hunt around at the end of the day, when I’m tired, looking for somewhere to stay. Pontevedra was my destination on day 3, approximately 20 kms away. It was a lovely cool morning, clear skies and walking out of town was easy. Houses started thinning out into a traditional sprawling village suburbs and it was a privilege to walk alone through the lanes.
This was comfortable walking albeit all on tarmac but I actually do not mind too much. There was little elevation, the odd slope suddenly appearing but nothing too steep or challenging. After an hours walking, I was on Rua Torre de Calle and for the first time there was a significant climb before the path came away from the road and followed a track, giving a short cut across countryside before hitting the road, prior to crossing the N-550.
This major route was not too busy but if there is significant traffic there is a crossing about 40 metres to your left as you meet the N road. The path continues for about 500 metres before starting to climb along Est da Teixeira. Again after a few hundred metres, keep a look out for a turning left as it is not that clear, well obviously not for me as I managed to miss it, walking a hundred metres further before a kind pilgrim shouted out to me!
The turning left takes you onto Camino do Loureiro do Viso and again, there is a decent climb uphill passing a rest area and a fountain - Fonte O Viso. As the climb eases the road forks. If you follow the left path, it soon becomes a woodland track, easy to follow and it was good to be walking amongst trees once more. This eventually joins with a road again and virtually opposite is another woodland track which you need to take.
Carry on down this track for approximately 1/2 kilometre and it meets a paved road. Turn down the hill to the left and continue along a road. On the side of the road is a tribute to pilgrims, worth stopping and reflecting. A turning to the right takes you back into woodland and, as the path snaked in front of me, there were now glimpses of water from the sea/estuary. The teasing views were amazing, giving me some of the best scenery so far.
This delightful stretch continued until the track rejoined the N-550 and allowed me a stop off for breakfast just outside of Arcade. It was close on two hours of walking but the time, and the miles, had flown by such was the beauty of the scenery and the walk itself. Little did I know it was going to get even better!
The other side of the N-550 again took me through a nice residential area, winding its way through lovely lanes, lined with old and new houses, before descending down to the river.
The famous 'arrow bench' offered the perfect photo opportunity - arrow, river, bridge, houses on the other side. This was a truly beautiful place with lovely views both side of the bridge. The bridge, Ponte Medieval de Pontesampaio is Roman in origin but the current build is from medieval times. The area and the bridge was the scene of a major battle back in 1809 between Spanish and French forces and a Spanish victory led to the withdrawal of French troops from Galicia. This is what I love about the camino in that you are walking through centuries of history, not just visiting but following the paths that many before have walked on, lived by, fought over.
The area on the other side was just as pleasant to walk through, the path meandering through roads, lanes and alleyways, climbing steadily. It was really special.
At this point, i would just like to add that this is not a detailed route map as there are so many roads, tracks, paths that it would take an eternity to record. There are much more detailed maps on the many camino websites. My story is just that my story, it being more about what I see, what I hear and how I feel.
The path climbed out of the town and into countryside before crossing the PO-264 and plunging back into a wooded area, cutting out a lot of road walking. It crossed another couple of roads eventually climbing back through woods. There were a couple of stalls selling refreshments which was welcomed!
The path continued through woodland, track and road, some steady climbs and descents but then proceeded for a few kilometres, seemingly along a valley-side, before a split in the path, one being shorter but the other, whilst longer, offered better scenery. Having been caught out before I took the Camino Complimentario en O Pobo. This route took me through vineyards and was a great decision! It tracked along side a river and took me virtually all the way into the outskirts of Pontevedra. After that it was just follow the arrows, then google your accommodation and not before too long I was there, outside Bulezen Urban hostel, in the wonderful town of Pontevedra.
