I’ve priced a paid subscription as low as I can as I’m not looking to retire to the Bahamas anytime soon! It works out about 13 pence per day, or monthly, it’s the price of a cup of coffee (in England anyway!!)
Alternatively, you could consider buying me a cup of coffee to help support my work!!
Whilst I’m sure it still goes on, partying in the hotel rooms of pop and rock stars is certainly not as prominent in the media as in the the days of the Stones, Sex Pistols and AC/DC. The rise of social media has probably contributed to the decline of such activities, and the fear of accusation and litigation makes even the most hardened party animal as placid as a sloth at a yoga retreat.
So I like to think that I took part in one of the last such events where pop stars attempted a hedonistic lifestyle post-concert.
What I am about to tell you is absolutely true, every aspect.
I was in Bratislava, for anyone unfamiliar with the location it is the capital of Slovakia, attending a cultural gathering to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of my oldest friends. Growing up in our 20s and 30s we had enjoyed many memorable trips though some memories are a little hazy, before enjoying more relaxed trips away in our 40s. Approaching our 50s, cultural experiences, good food and good company were more important than clubbing and drinking and so after perusing a map of Europe, Bratislava was picked as the destination. It was a new destination for us and although it had a bit of a reputation for stag and hen weekends, it hadn’t quite hit the ‘booze cruise’ levels of other European capital cities.
And it was delightful! A small city on the Danube, a historic old town and castle, cheap prices and we stayed in a great hotel, the Park.
Now we had been out for the day wandering around, taking in the sights. The weather was warm, we had enjoyed sampling the local beers and wines and were on the way back to our hotel, when one of our party, admittedly the youngest member of our group, stopped and pointed at a man stood outside our hotel!
“That’s John Newman” he said, to which most of us responded, “Who is John Newman” (sorry John!)
As it transpired, John Newman was currently rocking the charts with his style of music and was touring Europe on the crest of a wave.
We wandered over and said hello and to give John credit, he stopped and talked to us, explaining that he was giving a concert to the good folk of Bratislava, that evening. He also explained he was staying in our hotel!
We wished him well and we went our separate ways.
Moving on about six hours and having enjoyed a very pleasant evening at a restaurant, we made our way back to the hotel. There were a lot of people milling about outside and, having asked at reception, we found that buried deep in the basement of the hotel, there was a very popular nightclub. We decided to roll back the years and head down there, reasonably confident that this would probably be our last opportunity to ever step foot in a club at such late hours.
The ride down in the lift was weird and even as we stepped out, we were none the wiser as to where the club was. We followed others heading that way and in front of us was a steel door, clearely soundproofed to the max as barely anything could be heard from inside. We paid up and went in to be hit by a cacophony of noise and strobe lights going off in every direction. The place was full, a mix of ages, all enjoying a great night/early morning of dancing, drinking and looking for loooove!
I lasted for one drink before deciding that was enough for me and happy to leave this activity to those of more tender years, I made my way back to the lift. This is where it went a bit strange.
There were about eight people also waiting for the lift and it was clear they were British. I asked where they were from and it came out that they were part of the John Newman entourage. Only fair that I give him an entourage what with him being top of the music charts.
The entourage had headed back from John’s concert, leaving him and others to finish off the post concert formalities. They too had dipped their toe in the nightclub but decided to make it an intimate and exclusive party in their hotel room (well John’s hotel room). They asked me what I was doing and without wanting to sound like an old man in a young persons club, I announced I was in charge of hotel security. I must add, at this point, that I don’t normally go around making up stories, but my bravado had been boosted by a couple of craft beers! Excellent they said, come on up and have a drink they said. John will be back soon they said.
Never one to miss an opportunity of a great after-dinner story I accompanied them in the elevator to the 10th floor or thereabouts. We made our way along the corridor to John’s room and despite his absence, access was gained. Beers were handed out, and my first and last rock and roll party started. Now if this had of been thirty years ago, I would have expected debauchery and illegal substances, for which I would have been an interested observer of course, but these days, pop stars know that being seen as wholesome, healthy and on the straight and narrow, makes them more marketable and thus more profitable.
With beer in hand I circulated, though eight people in a standard hotel room does not allow a great deal of circulating. I discussed hotel security protocols with someone who seemed in charge, though I’m not sure he was still buying it. I swapped home town pleasantries with a lady from London and feeling totally underwhelmed I was on the point of leaving. Just at that point though, the door opened and in walked John himself. I made a mental note of a potential security breach - he could have been a mad axeman - before introducing myself. Whether he remembered me from our brief meeting several hours earlier I’m not sure but he was still up for a beer and a chat despite it now being virtually daylight. One more beer saw me set to leave but not before two ladies started jumping on the bed. This is it, I thought, the party has started but one stumbled and the other got told not to break anything so she stepped down.
I bid the room farewell, did a double check up and down the corridor for deranged fans, keeping the pretence up to the end, and sidled out.
Great experience, great story to tell over a glass of port and the cheeseboard and even if a journalist had sneaked in, there would be no shock-horror story in the press.!

Buy Me A Coffee - Bert Syview
A fun read.
You've taken part in history there.
