So at the end of my Joy Of Flying - Part 1, I had just got airside and, after the stresses of Border Control had been overcome, it is generally the green flag for people’s holiday to start and their first experience is Duty Free!
Not that you have a choice mind, as all airports, unless someone tells me different, sends you from one pressure situation to a second one, all within 30 seconds or 50 metres. Now the Border Control pressure is in your face, they make you nervous, they want to see you sweat. Duty Free gives the impression of a relaxed shopping experience but at the end of the day, purchases equal profit and profit pays bonuses and, from the moment you cross the unmarked border into Duty Free, you are on their radar.
The place smells nice, it looks bright and sparkly, attractive ladies and gentlemen float about as if freshly sprayed from a bottle of eau de toilette, soft seductive voices whisper words like Black Opium, Honey Eau and Intense, seducing your senses into buying their perfumes, all the while scanning the shop floor for the next punter. It’s a well-rehearsed process - smiles, sniff, sell. Customers become intoxicated with the heady aromas, whilst liberally spraying themselves with even more stuff, until the heady scent of Mugler has mixed with a multitude of other fragrances, to the point that you are coated in an indistinguishable aroma that you think smells enticing and attractive but actually makes the person behind struggle to breathe.
As a man, I gravitate towards the aftershaves for some samples, applying a squirt here and a squirt there, thinking that, as well as smelling nice, my appearance will change to that of the models in the adverts, the rugged pioneer type windsurfing or paragliding or the suave Italian gent, in white tuxedo. Alas, as soon as Duty Free ends so does the dream and it’s back to being plain old Bert, albeit a bit more fragrant.
Perfumes and aftershaves give way to creams for every part of the body, sunglasses of every shape and colour and Toblerone! Ah Toblerone, the ubiquitous Toblerone, big, chunky and loved by geometry teachers. It’s sits big and proud, like the Matterhorn it resembles, in just about every airport the world over. In the price list of Duty Free shops, it sits just shy of expensive but costs enough to be deemed a nice gift to take home to partners, children etc and so triangular packages poke from Duty Free plastic bags and the shareholders of whichever multi-national company rub their hands with glee.
Whilst I’ve written plenty about Duty Free, to be honest, I never buy much, the odd cut price 40% off aftershave but that’s about it. It was though, time for a coffee, so on a cloud of Caroline Herrera VIP 212, I floated through to the shopping mall type area - designer shops, chain cafes and restaurants and Wetherspoons!
The noise level rose. Seductive voices of the scent sellers gave way to the bar and cafe brigade who were fuelling themselves as vigourously as the waiting jets.
That steady stream of excited holidaymakers that had meandered their way through the airport, slowly and relatively calmly, were now in the bottleneck that is departures. At this point it could go one of two ways! For some it’s a tiresome wait, for others it’s a time to get in the holiday mood. While I consider all airports an absolute rip-off in terms of prices they charge, European airports seem to be able to get away with it because they always seem to deliver a much better service. In the UK, airports could be the same as our continental cousins, but in most, the busiest part of the departure lounge is the pub or bar. Invariably it is a Wetherspoons pub, not that that is a problem. Wetherspoons is a very successful pub chain that offers amazingly cheap drinks and food and can be found on most High Streets. This guarantees it strong customer base and, to be fair, it delivers a great service.
Once you put a pub airside and do not offer any real viable alternatives, then I feel it starts to go downhill. A captive audience, an increasingly excited captive audience, an increasingly excited captive audience who, despite the hour of the day, are keen to get the first drop of alcohol down their necks ensures a raucous crowd at most hours of the day. I’ve seen tables full of pints of Guinness and full English breakfasts at 03.00 hours, Prosecco corks being popped with a sausage breakfast roll at 04.30 and a few drams of whiskey being savoured (for medicinal purposes only) along with a pain au raisin just minutes before the final call to board.
The further into the day you go, the busy the pub gets. Two years ago, I flew from London Gatwick. The Wetherspoons there, called The Wonky Wing or something like that, was heaving. It was about 6pm and I was desperate for some food and a beer. There appeared to be no tables spare in the pub eating area, the noise levels were deafening and the smell of burgers, pies and pasta mingled with hoppy scents of local ales, Somerset ciders and vintage wines from the Dordogne or was it Dorking? Suddenly, from 30 metres, like a buzzard spotting a fieldmouse, I caught sight of an empty table for two, which as well as being very timely, the fact that I was on my own, was perfect, as it would have struggled to fit two plates on it. Down I flew (still in buzzard mode) and sank my talons into the back of the chair and did everything I could, other than urinate on the table, to indicate to the other birds of prey swooping about, that this was my space! Note to self - check whether birds mark their territory akin to lions!!
Settled in, I perused the menu uncertain whether to go for the steak tartare with quails egg followed by poached Dover Sole with samphire and fondant potatoes. Waking myself from my Michelin star day dream, I look at the extensive choice of pub classics. Gone are the days of popping to the bar to buy a beer. Oh no, now the food and beer is ordered via the app as is everything else in life or so it seems. All I wanted was a nice juicy burger and a beer, so I ordered the flame-grilled, double cheese stack with smoked bacon, slaw and pickles. I’m hoping that I sounded all American as you read that and, like me, you were starting to drool at the thought of it. The reality, when it arrived all of 8 minutes later, was as far from an American classic as I am from being Brad Pitt. Having said that, with a far wind, poor light and if your sight is not great, then you will see a passing resemblance to Mr Pitt, providing you are passing at 100km per hour.
Food and beer arrived promptly. You cannot complain about the service. The food though, for the £14 I paid for it, probably did require a complaint. If I had been in town at a bar or restaurant I would have passed on some comments, but the chance of getting through to anyone here was somewhat limited. It was food, it was challenging and it was lacking in that all too important ingredient - taste! It was accompanied by a football team of fries, all 11 of them. Still, there was a hole to be filled and like any seasoned porn star, I took one for the team.
As I leaned back in my chair, satiated by the culinary fare, and sipping my beer, I looked around at my fellow diners. It was easy to spot those who had checked in early and were a good four pints and two burgers into their holiday. Laughter flowed as freely as the beer, and as each minute passed, the decibels slowly increased. Stressed parents in charge of family groups were trying to keep all parties in one place and calm. Children and grandparents have a tendency to wander and the last thing you need, as the boarding gate opens, is young George or senior Margaret, shopping, in the toilets or just wandering about. The stag and hen parties, having indulged from the moment they sat down, have peaked and the late flight, long day syndrome, coupled with the afore-mentioned alcoholic beverages, thankfully sees a subdued crowd, keen to board and grab a quick snooze. They have much further to go in terms of celebrating so any sleep is welcome.
Lone travellers fall generally into two camps. Business people or adventurers. Thankfully, I was in the latter, heading to Northern Spain to walk a camino. I could leave the laptop, emails and endless problems behind and look forward to two weeks of walking alone, clearing my mind and looking at what is all around us but we often have very little time to appreciate it. The business people are either heading to or from their place of work, their meetings, their next step up the career ladder. In August this year, my career ladder ends as I have decided to take retirement from my position. I don’t intend to stop working, I just want a new challenge and will consider any type of work that gives me more time for doing the things I love. Please get in touch if you have a 15 hour a week vacancy that pays very well and requires me to sit and ponder a lot. Writing certainly is not the answer!!
I took a final walk around the shops and cafes, sensing that boarding was about to begin. My fellow travellers also had that sense that something was underway as you could see a shift in the behaviour of the masses. Like birds about to take flight or animals about to stampede, some localised activity could be spotted. Bags were pulled together, children were rounded up, coats were put on. Noise levels rose like the drumming of a million locust wings. All eyes were glued to the departures board, a sense of anticipation. And then it came, the board clicked over, the gate was open, people could board. As one, they rose and streamed towards gate 32, at pace. Anyone caught in their path was trampled underfoot, a casualty of the summer holiday migration. The sudden departure of 300 people left a large space at the watering hole (the pub) which was filled just as rapidly by an influx of new people to the departure lounge and the beer/burger circle of life continued.
I waited ten minutes till the mayhem had subsided and calmly made my way to the boarding gate. As we all know, the migrating herd would once more be at a standstill waiting for the final gate to be opened. The plane sits patiently on the tarmac, its passengers sit/stand, looking out in frustration.

Buy Me A Coffee - Bert Syview
