A few kilometres from Padron. A pocos kilómetros de Padrón

I’ve priced a paid subscription as low as I can as I’m not looking to retire to the Bahamas anytime soon! Padron to Santiago- approximately 24km
My last day of walking and that made me really sad. This walk had got better and better and whilst I was looking forward to the final stretch with it came the knowledge that it will be over.
I think this was the earliest I had woken and so keen to take advantage of the early start I was out of the door and into the dark back streets of Padron, leaving behind this lovely little Albergue.
So, as is my way, I will take you back to last night and exploring Padron.
I had checked into Albergue Corredoiras quite early, around 3pm. The man on reception was really welcoming and showed me round. The bunks were fantastic, all nicely positioned, with space and privacy. For one final time, I did my end of day tasks and with the sun still shining, I headed out to explore Padron.
I really liked the place. I found a quiet bar in a small square and ordered a beer.
At 4pm, the bar closed, but the lady left me to finish my beer in peace. After that I just strolled around in the early evening sunshine stopping off at the Church of Santiago Apostolo de Padron for a quick look around. I then followed the river (or is it a canal?) through a shaded tree-lined park to what seemed like the centre before stopping for another beer to watch the world go by. Back along the river, I noticed a beautiful building rising above the town. It was the Convento Do Carme, a neoclassical building built in the 18th century.
Originally inhabited by the monks of the Discalced Carmelite order, it is now in the hands of the Dominican Fathers.
It was a short steep climb along the road and some steps but the view from up there was just stunning.
Sadly, the convent was closed so I could not go inside but I have attached a link below which gives more detail
https://www.caminodesantiago.gal/pt/recurso/-/recurso/4979/convento-do-carme
I stood on the viewing area looking across Padron and I have to say it offered some of the best views of my camino.
Coming down the steps, it takes you past the Fonte do Carme and over the Ponte de Santiago. There is a statue of Rosalia de Castro, a Galician poet and novelist and considered a key figure in 10th Spanish literature.
All this exploring in the heat was tiring so I returned to the albergue for a rest.
Dinner out was interesting. I had arranged to meet my Slovakian friends who had found what looked to be a really well reviewed restaurant, but there seemed some concern over the time it opened. I got there first and the door was locked but there were a few people were inside. I looked through the door and the owner came and said only when the whole party was here could we go in and if it was not soon, we couldn't!
Thankfully the others arrived and we managed to go inside. It was called Restaurante A Casa Dos Martinez. It was very simply styled, some quirky features and the owner was a unique character. The food and wine were just amazing. Bizarrely though at 9pm the restaurant closed. We were not asked to leave and so finished our food and drinks but it was a bit unusual. Not sure if that was the normal hours or a unique occasion but it made a good talking point and did not distract from the wonderful meal.
And so back to the beginning of this article and after a great nights sleep I was up and away in darkness.
The path was easy to follow, with the first yellow arrow popping up immediately. As I said early, I had stayed in one of the last albergues on the Santiago side of Padron, so very soon I was heading out of the town, crossing the Sar river once more, past the Albergue Rio Sar before hitting the N-5550. It was a left turn then an immediate right turn, walking past the Church and Cemetery of Santa Maria de Iria Flavia, the view appearing even more beautiful and eerie as the darkness faded.
I was then in the quiet edges of the town, the roading twisting and turning before hitting the N-550 once more. I followed this road for a few hundred metres, going straight on at a major island and then past Hotel Scala before finally taking a left turn onto quieter roads.
And that’s where I’m going to leave this stage of the walk as I wanted to give a much more detail of my journey into Santiago.

Padrón a Santiago- aproximadamente 24 km
