The World's Wickedest Man. El hombre más malvado del mundo
The notorious but unknown resident. El residente famoso pero desconocido
You have received this article because you kindly subscribed to my Substack page. For that, I am really grateful. If you appreciate receiving these articles, please consider supporting my work by becoming a paid subscriber. I’ve priced a paid subscription as low as I can as I’m not looking to retire to the Bahamas anytime soon! It works out about 13 pence per day, or monthly, it’s the price of a cup of coffee (in England anyway!!)
Alternatively, consider buying me a cup of coffee!!
I happened to be visiting friends in Leamington Spa and had a vague recollection of a famous/notorious person who was associated with the place.
I had to google his name to remember who he was and it all came flooding back to me. He was, according to various information websites, a philosopher, magician, poet, painter, novelist and mountaineer and ……. an occultist!
You would imagine that with such a variety of academic and sporting achievements there would be some recognition in his home town, a blue plaque or something similar.
I found out where he was born and took a walk past his house, but there was nothing to indicate this being the birthplace of Aleister Crowley, though having been given the nickname of the Worlds Wickedest Man you can perhaps understand why!
Born into a wealthy family, he was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and his inheritance allowed him to travel the world. He wrote poetry and various works about his travels, including his growing interest in the occult.
He gained a reputation as a skilled chess player and took part in climbing expeditions to K2 and Kanchenjunga, the second and third highest mountains in the world, but it was his growing interest into the occult and mysticism for which he will be remembered, culminating in him founding the religion of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century.
During World War 1 he resided in the USA where he contributed to a pro-German newspaper. After the war, he moved to Sicily but the death of a young follower, allegedly during sacrilegious rituals, earned him the title amongst British Press of the ‘World’s Wickedest Man’.
With money running out, he moved back to Britain where he wrote another book, his last notable achievement.
He died, in poverty, in Hastings in 1947.
Aleister Crowley - An infamous son of Leamington Spa
I have included a link to a couple of websites detailing his life

Buy Me A Coffee - Bert Syview
