Wet, Wet, Wet! ¡Mojado mojado mojado!
Love has definitely not been all around.
You have received this article because you kindly subscribed to my Substack page. For that, I am really grateful. If you appreciate receiving these articles, please consider supporting my work by becoming a paid subscriber. I’ve priced a paid subscription as low as I can as I’m not looking to retire to the Bahamas anytime soon! It works out about 13 pence per day, or monthly, it’s the price of a cup of coffee (in England anyway!!)
Alternatively, consider buying me a cup of coffee!!
As the old saying goes, it never rains but what it pours and whilst that may be a quaint old phrase from yesteryear, the reality so far in 2024, is that it has done just that. Rainfall records are tumbling quicker than the skittles in a ten-pin bowling alley with every day beholding the wettest day/week/month/season/year since records began.
Regardless though how you present the data, to us mere mortals it has just been wet. Very wet!
So how ironic, that on the first warmish/dry weekend of the year, I got sun-burned. It was pleasantly warm, certainly not hot, the wind was blowing strongly and I was out in the garden and allotment for the best part of twelve hours over the course of the weekend. It was only on Sunday evening, I felt the skin on my forehead tighten and start to feel a bit tender. Foolish mistake to make!
For the first time this year, I could comfortably stand on the grass and mud, without going up to my ankles in water. The first cut could be made on the grass, which was by now 30cm long in some areas and whilst giving the appearance of being dry, at the base it was still sodden. You could almost sense the relief from the blades of grass to be away from the moisture and to feel sunshine on their little, green, slender faces!
It’s amazing how wonderful everything suddenly looks when the sun comes out. Those drab wet bushes and flowers spring to life, the warm air dries everything out nicely, the view is enhanced by the sunlight and because it is still spring, everything is green, fresh and starting to come alive.
I’ve not done a update for several weeks from my allotment as it was, being perfectly honest, pointless. Little has happened down there because of the atrocious weather and there are so many photos I can post of several square metres of wet mud. This has been the worst start to a growing year I can recall and everything is so behind. It will catch up, but there are already some crops that will struggle to grow and give a good return.
Miraculously, the onions I had planted, managed to avoid sitting for days in water, due partly to me having raised the soil level a few centimetres; it seemed to work. Over the weekend, I have planted my ‘second early’ potatoes - Charlottes. These are a favourite of mine and seem to like the soil on the allotment. I have also put a few in tubs as this seems to keep them a little more protected from bugs and pests. It also seems to make them grow a bit quicker and they are always the first to be pulled up. There is nothing better than steamed potatoes, with a sprinkling of salt and butter!
In the greenhouse, lettuce, leeks, and herbs are underway. A simple but great way to save money, even for the novice gardener, is to buy herb seeds - bail, coriander, parsley etc.
Sow several seeds into small pots, store them on your window sill and within three to four weeks you should have some wonderful fresh herbs. No effort, no skill needed, and you will get the same pot of herbs that you would buy from a supermarket for a fraction of the cost.
Fruit bushes are starting to bud and apple trees are full of blossom. The soil still needs to be a bit warmer before I can sow my radishes, chard, beetroot etc. Whilst it has dried and warmed on the surface, underneath it is still cold and damp and the seeds will just not germinate. I will though get courgettes and beans underway in the greenhouse.
Everything this year seems to be a month behind and looking outside now at the gathering clouds, I think this may continue to be the theme through April; the long range forecast is not showing much improvement.
I can only admire the farming community, the people who grow our crops and the balancing act that they do to deliver food to our plate. Constantly battling the elements, worrying about crop failures and being squeezed by the global giants that control the pricing. For them, as it has been for generations, it is more than a job, it’s a passion, a lifestyle, a commitment.
I look forward to giving you more regular updates, now that the weather SHOULD be improving!!

Buy Me A Coffee - Bert Syview
Bon courage, Bert! Herr I am in Ponferrada doing hospitalera duty. Nice sun but I envy you your allotment
