When The Road Runs Out. Cuando el camino se acaba
A Camino for a dying man. Un Camino para un moribundo
You have received this article because you kindly subscribed to my Substack page. For that, I am really grateful. If you appreciate receiving these articles, please consider supporting my work by becoming a paid subscriber. I’ve priced a paid subscription as low as I can as I’m not looking to retire to the Bahamas anytime soon! It works out about 13 pence per day, or monthly, it’s the price of a cup of coffee (in England anyway!!)
Alternatively, you could consider buying me a cup of coffee to help support my work!!
If you could walk a Camino with anyone, past or present, who would it be?
A historical figure, a sporting superstar, a star of stage or screen, a genuis from the arts or science, a parent, a child, a sibling, a friend?
I’m sure the selection process would be long and difficult. What criteria would you apply to allow yourself to make such a choice?
For me it is easy. I can read all about what famous people have achieved through the centuries whenever I want. I can watch live sports events and be royally entertained. I can visit cinemas and theatres and watch the latest must-see shows or films or catch up on old classics on the television. What I can’t do is go back in time and re-live some of the best years of my life with a very close friend. It is this close friend that I would choose to walk the Camino with. He is 60, a few months older than me as I’m still clinging on to my 50’s. We have enjoyed so many memorable occasions together that one more trip would be just another chapter in a very long book.
The only problem with doing this walk is that he is dying, with a limited life expectancy of months. Having said that, he has already pushed past the first date that they gave him for his time on earth to be over and we are, of course, hoping that he pushes this latest prediction back too.
The reality is, sadly, that however much his fight to stay alive continues, he cannot do such a walk and it will come to an end.
We met when we were young lads, just 17 years old, playing rugby and grew up together. As well as rugby, we used to go out at weekends, enjoying life, getting into mischief as most do. Marriages, children, divorces, followed but we were always friends, part of a larger very close-knit group, that bonded through rugby, life’s challenges and having fun.
He was a big powerful man, with a huge presence in a room and would happily chat with anyone. We stood alongside each other on the rugby field, literally fighting side-by-side and then stood in the bar afterwards having a beer. Over the years it has been many beers, many laughs, and enough stories to tell that would fill a book or two. Cancer is now hitting him hard and his body is frail. I sat next to him at a a dinner to celebrate his 60th birthday and whilst he was still good company, his lack of appetite and drinking only water was a clear sign of his decline.
We have been on many walks over the years but he has never walked a Camino and if there is one thing I could do for him, it would be to walk alongside him as we made our way to Santiago. There are some people in life who you are completely comfortable with. You can talk, you can stay quiet, you can joke with without offence. To have the opportunity to walk to Santiago De Compostela alongside him would be a fitting way to celebrate his life. Five years ago I had not even heard of the Camino, but having experienced it, I can testify on it’s power to inspire, to restore, to rejuvenate. It wouldn’t fix my friend but if he could have the opportunity to undertake it, I’m sure he would feel stronger.
We are all heading in the same direction, metaphorically and literally, and we know that at some point the sands of time will run out.
Keep fighting my friend

So sorry to hear about your friend’s state of health. It is hard to accompany people on what is their Camino, after all. Sending hugs
They say if we have one friend like that in our life we are blessed as it isn’t common. Being in the dusk of that relationship must be extremely hard but at the very least you have had the privilege and joy of having such a great friendship.
