Who Needs Netflix When You Can Comment On A Camino Group?
If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Si no puedes decir nada agradable, no digas nada en absoluto.
You have received this article because you kindly subscribed to my Substack page. For that, I am really grateful. If you appreciate receiving these articles, please consider supporting my work by becoming a paid subscriber. I’ve priced a paid subscription as low as I can as I’m not looking to retire to the Bahamas anytime soon! It works out about 13 pence per day, or monthly, it’s the price of a cup of coffee (in England anyway!!)
Alternatively, you could consider buying me a cup of coffee to help support my work!!
Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC I-player and the plethora of other media outlets that have sprung onto the scene so rapidly that I haven’t a clue what they are, but like alien colonies, I know they are out there!
All provide entertainment and amusement of varying degrees of quality, some free, some at a small cost, but all, in theory, easily accessible. And who hasn’t binge watched a series (or two) in one evening.
However, there is another player on the scene. Admittedly it’s been there a while but it is free and is very easy to access and for me highlights a rich but occasionally sinister seam of content that swings hugely between humour and frustration, sympathy and annoyance, dismissiveness and anger.
I am referring to comments, particularly comments on the various Facebook groups that I follow and even more specifically on many of the Camino related Facebook book groups that I have joined.
If you want to be royally entertained, in either a positive or negative way, then spend five minutes looking through comments to see what delights/horrors there are. Sadly, the nice helpful comments are ones that fade into obscurity, drifting away on the ebb and flow of the vitriol that inevitably washes up. Regardless of how innocuous a question is there are people out there who, so it seems, take great delight in condemning or ridiculing someone’s question. And for what reason?? What benefit/pleasure do they get from acting like an obnoxious idiot?
So what if the same question has been asked before? If you don’t want to contribute to the thread then just ignore it. Have you nothing better to do than spew up your bile over such a minor thing? The concept of the Camino, and for me, I’m still learning of its beauty, is that we try and help one another. If I can add a comment that adds some value then I will happily do so. If I can’t add anything to the conversation, I don’t.
Please remember that we were all new to the Camino once and your first time of walking such a distance, in an unfamiliar country, does leave you with varying degrees of trepidation. I know I asked some questions that will have been asked before, but you do like to hear an answer to your specific question, one that is personal to you. In addition, it makes you feel part of the group, part of the Camino experience.
There is absolutely no need to humiliate or embarrass someone for asking an opinion on shoes or boots, size or make of rucksack or public or private albergues. It is just not necessary. Those people asking the questions are probably new, uncertain or just plain worried. We do not know anything about them, their age, their fitness, their experience of walking, their ability to communicate; they are seeking assurance, comfort and guidance regardless of the question or issue they have.
So you big, tough, faceless keyboard warriors, have just a shred of decency before mocking others and either keep quiet or contribute.
The Camino has provided me with immense pleasure, a lifetime of memories and is a source of inspiration and belief in that the majority of humans are decent people. I can only laugh at and pity the stupidity and ignorance of those few who just trawl the Camino to offend.
Buy Me A Coffee - Bert Syview
Great point. I love reading comments.
Not keyboard courage, it is an encapsulation of who they are as an individual. They have read the "group rules" -which is a code of conduct, but they do not see that their conduct violates the rules. To have to tell grown adults "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all" is rudimentary. For them to go through the effort to join a group, but their behavior once inside is to ruin another's experience -again, who they are. I leave more groups than I join these days.
